So, I wanted to start out this blog with a more somber quote. I work at a nursing home, so I see the elderly everyday and the struggles they have with mobility, motor skills and even basic decision making. I am lucky enough to have a mom and a dad who are still married. I am extremely close with both of them. Growing up is something you think about yourself doing. While we are trying to figure life out, our parents are also figuring things out too.

Things change for our parents as their children grow older and "leave the nest." I do not want to ramble on and on about how important my parents are to me, but I think I made my point. Even if you do not have the best relationship with your parents now, think about the future when you get married and/or have kids. Don't you want them to have grandparents?

Your parents are the people who brought you into this world. Appreciate them now, before too much time passes and you can't make things right. I am so thankful for my job and how it has opened my eyes to how some people treat their parents. I know I will never be one of those people.

  1. I really love your post. It's interesting to see how a lot of my peers and I have come to appreciate our parents. I know in High School a lot of kids, including myself, take them for granted and don't really realize how awesome they are until you move away.

But on another note, some people really do have crummy parents. I have witnessed first hand bad parents with my best friend. Her parents love her but are too selfish to put their problems aside so the kids benefit. I've been their for her and her younger sibs for a long time and it is so unfortunate to see the toll it takes on kids when parents split up and still carry on the fight years later.

But that is just one unfortunate case. I truly am blessed that my parents are who they are. Thank you for your post, I will probably call my parents sometime today :)

  2. I think it is great you work at a nursing home. I think that is great but at the same time sad. Some of the people are put there and forgotten about. My son is in 3rd grade and they have pen pal buddies with the local nursing home and they make them cards for the holidays. They did a field trip to the nursing home and met their buddies and talked to them. I know the elderly really appreciated it.

  3. I couldn't agree more about making sure your family, especially parents, are kept a part of your life. I had a huge falling out with my parents as a teenager. I felt as if they couldn't relate to my issues or understand what I was going through and how I was feeling at all. It was my "I hate you" phase, if you will. I don't know if I grew up or what, but we worked through our problems and mis-communications and I couldn't be happier. My mom is basically my best friend and I tell her everything, and my dad and I even take a father/daughter canoeing trip every year. I don't know what I would do without them and I am so glad that I accepted them back into my life.

  4. I LOVE my parents and have always been very appreciative of them. Some of my best freinds in high school however, talked to their parents in ways that I could never even imagine. I would always be shocked at the tone and attitude they would get with their parents and they would always be surprised at the respect I had for my parents. Well, as we've gotten older, I have noticed that their relationships with their parents have really improved and they are now starting to realize how important parents are and how lucky they are to have them.

  6. This is such an awesome quote Sarah! This is a sad realization, but it is better to realize it now that before it is too late. Parents do so much for us & sometimes we forget that they are not going to be around forever so we have to treasure every moment we have with them

  7. I think this is a beautiful quote and a good reminder that we need to slow down and spend time with our family because they won't be here forever.

  8. This was so cute!! And such a cute post :) I, also, love my parents but sometimes with how busy our lives are as college students, we forget to stop and show them we love and appreciate them. I know I get SO annoyed with my mom when she calls 3 times a day (not exaggerating) but at the same time, I know she loves me and is still trying to figure out life without me at home years later :)

  9. Sarah,
Thank you so much for the quote. It definitely made me think especially with my own birthday coming up. My parents are starting to grow old, but as I grow up I should not forget to have a relationship with them. Thanks for making me think! lol

  11. That is a wonderful quote. Sometimes it scares me to think of how old my parents are getting, but it certainly does make me appreciate and cherish all of the time I have with them.

  12. I love this quote. I know I for one need to take more time out of my day to tell my family members how much I love them. It can be hard to remember especially when we are all so busy, but I am definitely going to make a point to try to do it more often :)

  13. Awesome quote! I used to work at an assisted living for dementia and Alzheimer's patients. It's extremely sad to see them go through what they do but it does make you think of how much we need to appreciate still having our whole lives ahead of us and realize it's never too late to start appreciating and cherishing everyone and everything in your life.
